
Your rights and duties :
- Tracks and cycle bands are built exclusively and made available for 2 or 3 tyres cycles (except derogation which allow motorized cycles).
- Tracks and cycle bands are not compulsory (decrees and orders)
- Cycling in pedestrian areas is allowed
- Children younger than eight years old can cycle on pavement
- The use of certain road is forbidden (motorways, freeway …..)
- It is forbidden to hang on the bicycle on the street furniture except on the equipment specially provided for this purpose.
- During the day only, cyclists can bike next to one another but must be one in front of the other if a vehicule is about to overtake them (art. R. 431-6 to 8). However, it is highly recommended and more cautious to bike one in front of the other.
Compulsory equipment :
- A horn: every bicycle must have a horn, that is to say a little bell which the sound can be heard at least 50 meters around.
- Breaking system: every bicycle must have at least two effective breaking systems (art. R. 415-1)
- Lighting: the night OR the day (when circumstances make it compulsory: rain, fog, tunnel..) every bicycle must be equipped with an effective lighting: a yellow or white light at the front, a red light at the back (art. R. 313-18,19 and 20)
- Day and night lighting, every bicycle must be equipped with one or two red reflecting device visible at the back, with a white visible reflecting device at the front and visible reflecting devices on the sides (art R. 313-20). The pedals must also have orange reflecting devices (art. R. 313-20).
Non compulsory but recommended equipment :
- The helmet is not compulsory but highly recommended
- A rear-view mirror.
- A pump
- A toolkit
- Clothes clear, of light colors
